A Canadian, Gordon Sinclair (d1984) penned and delivered a moving piece regarding Americans (hey, that's us) back in 1973. 

 

It was picked up and made into a record by Byron MacGregor (d 1999) of CKLW, a radio station in Windsor, Ontario 

(the Canadian side of Detroit), and became the single largest selling spoken word recording of all time.
